5 Tips for
Getting Great
Pictures & Video
It’s easier than ever to create images, graphics, and videos. Here are my top 5 tips for getting great pictures and video:
1. Get to know the camera on your phone. It’s powerful.
2. Understand the rule of thirds. The basic idea is to imagine a tic-tac-toe board on your camera’s viewfinder. You want to place the area of interest or the subject you are photographing on one of the intersecting lines. If you do this it makes your pictures more visually appealing.
3. Become a YouTube student. There are tons of great, free, and fun photography tutorials.
4. Take your time on your shots. Don’t feel rushed and take tons of pictures. You will regret not having the picture more than time lost taking the picture.
5. Hire a photographer. If you don’t think you can do it and if you have the money in your budget get a professional.
To create graphics, I use the adobe suite. Specifically, I love Photoshop, InDesign, and Premier. It’s very powerful and gives you a lot of control over what you are creating. For my personal use it costs $55 a month but there are nonprofit discounts. There are also some great free options out there like Canva and Adobe Spark. There’s nothing wrong using them. I’ve been at an event and used Canva to make a graphic on my phone.
If you are on a budget and want to step up your video quality. A cheap mic will take you far. If you have great 4K video shot on your expensive camera but the sound is echoey it really ruins the video. But people are more forgiving with ok video with great sound. Make sure you are spending your money wisely.
Those are my top 5 tips for getting great pictures and video. I hope it helps you next time you are trying to get the perfect image for your next campaign, project, or family reunion.
